Daniel Minock, who is an English instructor at Washtenaw Community College, began writing Thistle Journal a decade before the book's publication. The essays are about building a house with his father and living in it with his wife.
"My interest in nature," Minock says, "obvious to anyone who glances at my essays, might not be obvious to anyone noting where I've lived and what I've done."
Minock received his bachelor's and master's degrees in English from the University of Detroit, and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. He has been teaching for almost thirty years-at Wayne State University and Michigan State University before accepting his current position at Washtenaw Community College.
"But all along, I've watched birds, read biologists, puzzled over landscapes," Minock says. "Why didn't I get a job outdoors? I wonder. But here I am, happily writing essays in which the natural world is always present, living a half-mile from a freeway in the fastest-growing area of Michigan."
