“'Literary nonfiction, 'creative nonfiction,' and 'lyric essay' are some of the makeshift semantic hybrids in current use and designed to catch the sort of prose work which is very like an essay but which exploits the linguistic playfulness, associative logic, and imaginative license of poetry. It tends to prefer insinuation to insistence, resonance to resolution. If the critical essay challenges its topic to wrestle, the lyric essay invites it to dance. (Fact may be its escort, but it is too flirtatious to stand by Fact all evening.) But even as it dances, it glances about the room, bumping up against other guests, angling toward the fresh plate of hors d’oeuvres, spying on accoutrements and cleavages beyond the shoulder of its chosen concern. It is ruminative, sly, self-effacing, intimate, sneaky fast, and (as long as we’re breaking in new expressions) “idiosyncretic.” Instead of final findings, it provides an adventure for the voice and the self’s invention." —Arthur Saltzman, Objects & Empathy: Essays

The first work of creative nonfiction published by Mid-List Press was a reprint of Dr. William Nolen's classic story of his internship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City—The Making of a Surgeon. Since the release of Nolen's book in 1990, Mid-List has published several more books that also fall under the broad umbrella of "creative nonfiction," including memoirs and collections of nature writing, travel writing, personal essays, and literary criticism. The books cover wide geographies and disparate times, but all—to borrow author Arthur Saltzman's phrase—provide "an adventure for the voice and the self's invention."
